This review included 17 studies the majority (12) of which were in vitro; and all at risk of bias to greater or lesser extent. The results suggest that glycine powder air polishing had less potential for harm of oral hard and soft tissues than sodium bicarbonate powders.

This review focused on patients perception of air polishing for periodontal treatment. Nine studies involving 291 patients were identified suggesting that polishing with powders consisting of glycine seems to be associated with less discomfort during non-surgical periodontal therapy, that is supra- and subgingival air polishing.

This study compared the diagnostic accuracy of dental screening by hygiene-therapists with dentists. The results show that they could be used to screen for caries and periodontal disease. This could allow for a change in the traditional model of dental care seen in the UK.

This review looks at one potential side effect of clear aligner treatment, periodontal health. However only 5 small studies of limited quality are available. All of the included studies found that periodontal health improved however because of the limited evidence available the findings should be interpreted with caution.

Another review of failure rates of dental implants shows increased failure rates in patients with generalised aggressive periodontitis. Six studies (5 from the same research group ) involving 290 patients and 834 implants were included.

This new review identified 22 studies but no randomised trials and found a higher dental implant failure rate in periodontally compromised patients than health ones. However concerns over study quality means the findings should be interpreted with caution.

Today we look at a review of surgical treatments for the management of peri-implantitis. 21 studies were identified but only 5 were randomised trials, only one of which was at low risk of bias. While all approaches provided some benefit the available evidence is limited.

This Bayesian network meta-analysis only included 11 small studies of overall low quality. While the greatest reduction in PPD was seen with debridement in conjunction with antibiotics the difference are small so it is difficult to conclude that any particular non-surgical treatment for peri-implantitis performs better than debridement alone

This review compares the clinical outcomes of scaling and root planing with Er:YAG laser either as an alternative or as an adjuvant in patients with chronic periodontitis. 12 small trials were included and similar outcomes were seen with both treatments at 3 months . However hetrogeneity in teh studies and the small sample size mean that these finding should be interpreted with caution.

The review represents some of the output of the 2010 Global Burden of Disease studies and finds that severe periodontitis is the 6th most prevalent disease affecting about 11% of adults worldwide. The prevalence increases gradually with age with a steep increase between the 3rd and 4th decades.
