Atherosclerosis and periodontal disease is there an association?

This review looked at the evidence linking carotid atherosclerosis with periodontal disease 15 studies involving 17,330 patients were included. The overall pooled result showed periodontal disease was associated with carotid atherosclerosis, OR=1.27 (95% C; 1.14–1.41; P = 0.001). However, once adjusted for smoking and diabetes mellitus, this reduced to borderline significance OR=1.08 (95% CI; 1.00–1.18; P = 0.05).

Periodontal intrabony defect regeneration using platelet-rich plasma

Low quality evidence that periodontal treatment improves glycaemic control in diabetics

This update of a 2010 Cochrane review found low quality evidence that periodontal treatment involving scaling and root planing does improve glycaemic control in people with diabetes, with a mean percentage reduction in HbA1c of 0.29% at 3-4 months, but there is insufficient evidence to demonstrate that this is maintained after 4 months.

Smoking and tooth loss associated finds study

This large German cohort study with 23,376 participants found that smoking was associated with tooth loss with heavy males smokers (≥15 cigarettes per day) having a 3 times higher tooth loss.
