This review looked at the efficacy of fixed and removable functional appliances for the treatment of class II malocclusion. Just 4 trials were identified 2 of which were randomised. Limited evidence found fixed and removable functional appliances are effective in reducing overjet in children but there is little evidence to differentiate the approaches.

With orthodontic treatment lasting typically 18-24 months, adjunts to accelerate tooth movements would be welcome. This Cochrane review identified two RCTs on non-surgical interventions to accelerate orthodontic treatment. However, both studies were at high risk of bias, so we cannot rely on their findings.

This review of the use of oral appliances for the treatment of obstructive sleep apnoea identified 17 trials, all but one of which wере randomised. The results suggest significant benefits in respiration and sleep quality, compared to placebo devices or blank control.

This trial of the effects of primer on the bracket failure rate in orthodontic patients involved 49 patients, using a cross-mouth design; and found fewer bonding failures in the non-primer group 5.5%, compared with 3.1% in primer setting and adjusted odd ratio of 1.89 (95% CI 0.97–3.68).

11 studies were included in this review of chlorhexidine varnish to reduce mutans streptococcus in patients having a fixed orthodontic treatment. A majority of the studies demonstrated a positive effect but the quality of the evidence was weak.
