Mark-Steven Howe looks at a review of complete overdentures supported on mini-implants. Although 24 studies are included the majority are small and short term so while good overall overdenture survival was seen the results should be interpreted with caution.

This review of the effect of microthreads on marginal bone loss around implants identified 5 small RCTs with relatively short follow up times. While a beneficial effect was noted the clinical relevance will require more high quality studies with longer follow up period to determine.

This review of treatments for teeth with intrusive luxation included 8 studies. The studies were all considered to be at high risk of bias and suggested that spontaneous re-eruption should be the treatment of choice. However the small number of studies and limited quality means these findings should be interpreted with caution.

14 studies were included in this review of dental implant failure rates. Findings suggest that failure is not higher for diabetic patients than for non-diabetic patients.

38 studies were included in this review comparing survival rates of turned and anodised-surface dental implants. The findings suggest that turned implants have a higher failure rate but the evidence is limited as the review includes a substantial proportion of retrospective studies.

13 studies (10 RCTs, 3 prospective) were included in this review comparing the outcomes of short and standard dental implants. No difference were seen in studies lasting up to 5 years.

This review of platform-switching of dental implants included 17 RCTs and found that bone loss was lower than in regular platform implants, mean difference = -0.41mm (95%CI; -0.58 to -0.24) with no difference in failure rates RR = 1.10 (95%CI; 0.6–2.02).
