This update of a Cochrane review of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for the management of gagging in people undergoing dental treatment found very low-certainty evidence from four trials that was insufficient to conclude if there is any benefit of acupuncture, acupressure or laser at P6 point in reducing gagging and allowing successful completion of dental procedures.

This Cochrane review was only able to identify a single small RCTs of acupuncture to reduce gagging during dental treatment. This was insufficient to conclude any benefit. No evidence of other interventions was identified.

The aim of this review is to assess the effects of behavioural techniques, pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for management of gagging in patients undergoing dental procedures. As the authors note gaging-related problems contributed to about 20% of dental avoidance cases and a wide range of methods have been describe for management of the gaging patients.
