This review included 44 studies involving a total of 1170 patients and 1974 implants finding significant better outcome in favour of the implants placed in healed ridges (99.4% implant survival) compared with post-extraction implants (95.6% implant survival).

This review of qualitative studies of patients’ experiences of dental implants used a textual narrative synthesis and included 10 studies. Patients chose implants to improve confidence and resolve existing functional problems

This Cochrane review identified 8 RCTs of alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) techniques. They provide limited evidence that ARP minimises overall changes in residual ridge height and width six months after extraction.

This review of the impact of smoking on dental implants had broad inclusion criteria and included 107 studies. The findings suggest smoking affects implant failure rates, incidence of postoperative infections, as well as the marginal bone loss.

Only 7 small trials with 140 patients in total were available for this review. It suggests that adjunctive treatments did not significantly improve the efficacy of professional plaque removal in improving gingival indices, bleeding on probing or pocket depth.

This review of platform switching for dental implants included 18 RCTs in a meta-analysis and suggests an improvement in marginal bone loss. However, the longest study were only of 3 years duration and the authors recommend the results be interpreted with caution due to the presence of uncontrolled confounding factors in the included studies.

This review found a significantly higher mean survival for implant supported crowns (97%) compared with Intentionally replanted (IR) teeth (88%). Evidence for IR teeth was limited, being heterogeneous, old and potential suffering from publication bias.

While this new review has included 28 studies, only 6 were RCTs. They found that submerged dental implants had fewer failures than immediate loaded non-submerged implants. The relative risk of failure for immediately loaded compared to submerged implants = 1.78 (95% CI; 1.12 to 2.83).

This trial compared patient satisfaction with 1 or 2 implants supporting a mandibular overdenture. No significant differences between the groups were seen after 5 years.

While 53 studies were included in this review of implant overdentures only a narrative summary of the outcomes of chewing ability, bite force and patient satisfaction could be presented. While all the studies were prospective, information about the quality and risk of bias in the included studies is not reported.
