Peri-implantitis: Are locally administered antibiotics effective?

Tooth loss in diabetic patients

This review assessing the risk of losing teeth among patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) compared to those without DM included 10 studies the majority of which were cross-sectional (80%). While the findings suggest higher risk of tooth loss in patients with diabetes the findings should be viewed cautiously.

This review comparing the clinical performance of flossing before or after toothbrushing included two small RCTs involving a total of 60 patients. The findings suggest no difference with the use of floss before or after toothbrushing however the quality of the evidence is limited.

Periodontal disease: Does it increase risk of Alzheimer’s disease and mild cognitive impairment?

Participants who reported higher levels of depression and social isolation had greater risk of loneliness, along with people living alone with dementia.

This blog on a review evaluating the association between periodontal disease (PD), Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) was written by the Scottish Special Care StRs following a critical appraisal workshop. The review included 13 studies and suggests a link between PD and AD/MCI, but the evidence is limited.

Articaine: Safety and efficacy compared to lidocaine

This review assessing the safety and efficacy of articaine for routine dental treatment compared to lidocaine included 12 RCTs involving a total of 919 patients. The findings indicate that articaine is is a safe and efficacious local anaesthetic for all routine dental procedures.

Tooth loss during long-term periodontal maintenance

This review evaluating risk factors / predictors of tooth loss in patients with periodontitis having periodontal therapy and long-term periodontal maintenance (PM) included 33 studies only 3 of which were prospective. There findings suggest that patients having long-term PM suffer the loss of 1 tooth per patient every 10 years.

Orthodontic retainers and periodontal health

This review comparing the effects of vacuum-formed retainers (VFR) and Hawley retainers (HR) on periodontal health included 6 RCTs. While the findings suggests a statistical benefit in favour of HR in the short term the studies are small, short-term and most ( 5) were considered to be at high risk of bias.

Probiotics and gingival inflammation

This review of the effect of probiotics on gingival inflammation and oral microbiota in patients suffering from plaque-induced gingivitis included 11 RCTs. No clear evidence was found to indicate that oral probiotics have a positive effect on gingival inflammation and oral microecological environment of patients with gingivitis.
