shutterstock_129331361

This Cochrane review of the effects of periodontal treatment on glycaemic control in people with diabetes mellitus and periodontitis updates the 2015 version. Cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive in postoperative palatal pain management

Gingival graft

This review assessing the effect of cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive (CTA) in the management of palatal wound healing and post-operative pain after epithelialised gingival graft harvesting included just 4 small RCTs. While the findings suggest a potential benefit with CTA both the quantity and quality of the available evidence is very limited.

This review of the efficacy of interdental cleaning devices (ICDs) used with active substances, as adjuncts to toothbrushing included 7 RCTs. However, none of the available studies was at low risk of bias and all were small. While the findings suggest s benefit from using ICDs with active substances the evidence is of very low certainty so additional high qiality well reported trials are needed.

Tricalcium phosphates for infra-bony periodontal defects

shutterstock_28627237

This review of the clinical efficacy of tricalcium phosphates (-containing) biomaterials in the treatment of periodontal infra-bony defects includes 16 RCTs. While the findings suggest improvements in pocket depth and clinical attachment level only 6 of the studies contributed to the meta-analyses and the number of events and studies are small so the findings should be viewed cautiously.

shutterstock_19406029

This review of the effect of toothbrushing and chlorhexidine on the incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in patients on mechanical ventilation included 7 RCTs. The findings showed that toothbrushing and chlorhexidine reduced VAP,length of stay and duration of ventilation. However the findings should be interpreted cautiously because of study quality.

Periodontitis: Adjunctive amoxicillin and metronidazole with full-mouth scaling and root planing

This review of whether amoxicillin and metronidazole used as an adjunct to full-mouth scaling and root planing improved clinical outcomes included 11 RCTs. While the findings indicate significant improvements in clinical attachment level and pocket probing depth they may not be clinically important.
