Odontogenic keratocsyst – surgical treatments

This review of different surgical treatments for odontogenic keratocsysts (OKC) with respect to recurrence rates includes 40 observational studies. The finding suggest that enucleation plus peripheral ostectomy/curettage and 5-Fluorouracil had the lowest recurrence rate and enucleation alone the highest but the evidence is mainly of very low certainty.

This review assessing the risk of alveolar osteitis (AO) in in oral contraceptive users included 17 mainly observational studies. The findings showed an increased risk of developing AO in female oral contraceptive (OCP) users, RR = 1.98 (95%CI:1.42 to 2.76) compared to female non-OCP users

Bioactive glass and hydroxyapatite to occlude dentinal tubules

In her first blog for the Dental Elf Rebecca Manson takes a look at an in-vitro review of bioactive glass and hydroxyapatite for the occlusion of dentinal tubules. The findings provide some evidence that that bioactive glass/hydroxyapatite are effective in occluding dentinal tubules in an in-vitro setting. Well conducted long term clinical trials are needed to assess effectiveness in a clinical setting.

Omega-3 fatty acids as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy

This review assessing the adjunctive effect of omega-3 (ω-3) fatty acids and non-surgical periodontal therapy (SRP)on probing pocket depth (PPD) and the clinical attachment level (CAL) included 10 RCTs. The findings suggest that adjunctive ω-3 fatty acids provides a 0.39 mm improvement in PPD and 0.41 mm of CAL gain.

This review comparing of air polishing devices with conventional periodontal therapy (hand instrumentation and/or ultrasonic debridement), in patients undergoing periodontal maintenance therapy included 14 RCTs. The findings suggest that they have comparable clinical efficay although the evidence is of low certainty.

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis – topical interventions

This review of the efficacy and safety of topical interventions used for recurrent aphthous stomatitis included 72 studies assessing 29 different interventions. Most of the interventions did not demonstrate significant differences with limitednumbers of studies for some interventions and overal limitations in the quality of the evidence.
