Eating disorders associated with poor oral health

This new systematic review explored the links between eating disorders and oral health, which were first noted in the 1970s. Ten studies were included in the review and higher odds of dental erosion were seen in those with eating disorders, with the odds being greater in those with self-induced vomiting.

Dental caries and secondhand smoke associated

This Japanese cohort study analysed data for 76,920 children born between 2004 and 2010 attending routine health checkups finding that exposure to tobacco smoke at 4 months of age was associated with an approximately twofold increased risk of caries.

Tooth Mousse® for caries prevention – little evidence available

This review of Tooth Mousse® (casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate) for caries prevention only identified 12 studies (8 RCTs). Many were of short duration and exhibited a great deal of heterogeneity; while there is some suggestion of benefit, the quality of the evidence is very low.

Calcium hydroxide cavity lining in primary teeth

This review looks at the benefits and harms of cavity lining. However, only 3 very low quality studies comparing calcium hydroxide lining in primary teeth were identified. Restoration without lining did not significantly affect the risk of failure.

Fluoridated milk: low quality evidence of benefit

11 studies were included in this review of chlorhexidine varnish to reduce mutans streptococcus in patients having a fixed orthodontic treatment. A majority of the studies demonstrated a positive effect but the quality of the evidence was weak.

Sealants reduced caries in high-risk primary molars

This split-mouth trial conducted in 4-5 year old children found that sealants were superior to fluoride varnish applications in preventing the development and progression of caries in occlusal surfaces of primary molars over 1 year.

Different life course factors were associated with the development of dental caries among children and adolescents, including sociodemographic, biological, psychological, and oral health behaviors, as well as the dental status of mothers, children, and adolescents.

Pulpectomy in primary molars: little difference with 3 filing materials

This small trial compared the success rates of 3 different filling materials (RC Fill, Vitapex and Pulpdent ) following pulpectomy in primary molars. At 30 months there were no significant differences between the groups.
