This rapid technology review of the longevity of removable dental prostheses focused on complete dentures and partial plastic or metal dentures. It included a small number of systematic reviews, which were of limited quality and based on a small number of small studies. While good 5 year survival rates were found, the quality of the evidence means that the findings should be interpreted cautiously.

Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns or all-ceramic crowns?

This rapid review from the Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health (CADTH) identified 29 studies including 10 systematic reviews. The findings suggest a lower long term survival rate for ceramic crowns (48%) compared with porcelain fused to metal crowns (62%).

Alveolar ridge augmentation effective suggests review

This review of alveolar ridge augmentation procedures included 40 studies only 17 of which were RCTs . While a statistically significant improvement was seen, there was a very high degree of heterogeneity because of the wide range of clinical procedures, measurement approaches and healing times in the included studies.

Low income and tooth loss: a positive association

Seven of the 11 observational studies included in this review came from Brazil. An association between low income and tooth loss was demonstrated (OR = 2.52: 95% CI; 2.11- 3.01) even after adjusting for socioeconomic status ( OR = 1.66: 95% CI; 1.48 – 1.86).

Orthognathic surgery: intra-operative bleeding reduced with tranexamic acid

This review looked at the efficacy of haemostatic adjuncts on intra-operative blood loss in orthognathic surgery. 11 RCTs were included and found that tranexamic acid reduced blood loss by about a third whether used topically or intravenously.

This technology review looked at the effectiveness of crowns on root treated teeth. 3 systematic reviews and 4 non-randomised studies were included. They found that the short term survival with crowns or direct fillings is comparable but long term root canal treated teeth may have better survival.

Gingival recession: root surface modifiers did not improve surgical outcomes

Six small randomised controlled trials were found for this review assessing the use of root surface modifiers to improve the outcome of gingival recession surgery. None of the agents evaluated were seen to be of benefit.
